TIME for everyone to check their wallets or stashes of cash as they could be sitting on thousands more than expected.
People are just now realizing that some bills and coins can be worth thousands more than their named denomination.

Just like all items that are manufactured, certain qualities of coins and bills, along with their years of production, can make the money a collector's item and worth way more than originally intended.
The two-dollar bill is not one people see often, but that does not make just any note rare with nearly 1.4 billion in circulation today.
“For most of their history, $2 notes have been unpopular, being viewed as unlucky or simply awkward to use in cash exchanges,” the Bureau of Engraving and Printing has explained.
The bills are still being produced to this day, but if you know what to look for, the right bill might just make you money.

The place to go is to search collector websites and see what is being offered and if you have it.
An 1890 printed and uncirculated two-dollar bill with a red seal is likely to go for around $4,500.
Other two-dollar denominations with a red seal can run between $300 and $2,500.
Such bills with a blue or brown seal can still pull a profit at around $100 each.

A running list of other two-dollar bills can be found online, outlining other qualities that make a bill worth more than just $2.
While no one has time to memorize the whole list there are a few rules you can go by when scanning your bill to see if it is worth looking into.
First, the age of the bill is likely to increase its rarity, even if no other qualities are unique, the older the bill, the fewer of them there are around.
Next is the color of the seal, red and brown tend to run the highest profit and it's easy to look for a color to stand out against all the green.
Third is technically memorizing but not too much.
Different color combinations of serial numbers and seals can be rare and drive up a price.
Any 1880 bill that has a brown seal/red serial, brown seal/blue serial, or red seal/blue serial is worth looking into.
Finally, any bill that has not been circulated, if rare by any of these other qualities, will likely add anywhere between $100 - $1000 more to the value of the bill.
If two you are running short on two dollar bills to check, find out if your $1 coin is worth over $80,000 or if your penny is worth over $100,000.
